The Universe Tends to Right itself

Life will be better. This may sound like naiveté, or foolish, wishful thinking, but where is the harm in thinking it? If the world thinks otherwise, then you are not the one at fault. The world does not set what is right and wrong: what is good is good, and no force in the world can twist it another way…

From time to time, TV viewers are treated to serialized commercials—those who have a pattern or even a storyline. In the Philippines, we have been treated to the Max commercial, about the promise of two children, leading to a painful, but eventually fruitful, chance reunion. Or the saga of Lumen (perhaps considered one of the more successful in the advertising industry), where we are treated to the development and growth of family life. And, more recently, the Neozep “Soaps” where the heroine (Lualhati), becomes part of a Cinderella Love Story, ending in eventual reconciliation with the in-laws (they even threw in a “triangle” as part of a plot twist).

However, it is an international one that has caught my eye. The latest series of Pond’s commercials go through the same pattern that most love stories go (albeit plugging their product): a promise to be together, a pained reunion, and the eventual reconciliation. It was a simplified version, but what struck me finally was that he was ready to explode in a dramatic spate of words, and instead, she is won over by a simple gesture of his fidelity: the necklace which bound them to a promise. Though, in real life, this would follow by a heated exchange of words, or an even longer struggle, but the sight of that gesture would really bring anyone to tears.

Because the Universe has a tendency to right itself. Taken in the context of the Earth’s revolution, it takes time, and it takes very long patience, but the Universe finds a way to regenerate, and heal itself. This may seem like an optimistic side of things, but it’s true. In the Christian sense, however we may end in this world, if we lived it in glorification of God, and the goodness of His love, then we are promised Heaven. In the practical, secular sense, even if in life two souls are separated, eventually they will find themselves bound together, in the Earth by which they are buried.

Unfortunately, having been witness to the brutality and seeming heartlessness of fellow Man, when he is driven to such circumstances, we tend to forget the world’s inherent goodness. We see the world in a skeptic’s eyes, and take every blessing in cynical overtones. Through cynicism we corrupt Faith. It is this cynical worldview that has shaped many of America’s shows—shows where relationships end, are twisted, corrupted, and discredited to exhaustion. They reason that in the real world, there is never a happy ending, and one takes what one gets.

Again, taking the analogy of the Earth’s revolution: the world turns, but slowly, and it takes a large amount of patience for it to right itself. But it does. And the world does not revolve in a consistent spin. It wobbles. The earth finds its way back, but not in the way we would expect it to. Life will find a way to right itself, maybe not in the form of reunion or reconciliation, but in another form. The monsters of terrorism, cruelty, violence and sadism are unnatural in the world. Yes, they are unnatural; we are obliged everyday, to feel revolted against this continuous backdrop of hate. It is only when we numbed ourselves to this hate that it took shape and became real.

Life will be better. This may sound like naiveté, or foolish, wishful thinking, but where is the harm in thinking it? If the world thinks otherwise, then you are not the one at fault. The world does not set what is right and wrong: what is good is good, and no force in the world can twist it another way. And who knows? If you espouse that faith, and that hope, maybe at the end of the day you will end up in that “airport of your life”, where you find finally your soul’s companion. Or maybe you will find happiness simply in the fulfillment of what is good, as anyone who does eventually finds.

If we have Faith, we would take that leap when the chance finally comes.
