Controlled Chaos: Readings on the Cultural Revolution

To the Chinese state, it was an effort to purge Counter-Revolutionary thought in China.   Mao openly expressed the fear that Socialism was being undermined by those destroying it from within, and called on the heroic rising from the masses.   The West saw it as an example of the horrors of Communism, and denounced its barbarity.

To those who were caught in the chaos, it was Hell and Madness.

There are many books and articles written on the Cultural Revolution.   Here is a collection of a few of them:

 1. Red Scarf Girl: A Memoir of the Cultural Revolution

A story of survival of a hapless victim caught in the conflagration of her land.

You can find a copy of it in Amazon in this link: Here

 2. The Cultural Revolution: The Controversial History of Mao Zedong’s Political Mass Movement after the Great Leap Forward

An in-depth look at this period of China’s history

 3. The Killing Wind: A Chinese County’s Descent into Madness during the Cultural Revolution

You can find a copy of it in Amazon in this link: Here

 4. The Cultural Revolution: A People’s History, 1962-1976
